Albuquerque
May Day is Jay Day
Million Marijuana March (M3)
Occurred as scheduled on May 1st at High Noon

Estimates of from two to three hundred people gathered on the SW corner of UNM to participate in the Albuquerque Million Marijuana March (M3). The attendees were gaily attired with bright patches of color looking like spring flowers coming up in the fresh grass. Lots of signs, drums, and loudspeakers made for an almost constant background soundtrack, which was added to from time to time by various other musical instruments.

Support was frequent and loud from the passers-by honking their horns. Fire trucks and city busses honked, too. The police were notably absent; however, one could usually see one within a few blocks. You just never saw one going through the intersection.

After about an hour or so of rallying there at Central and University, we proceeded to head out on the March. The March took the route on the preceding page heading east on Central Avenue from our gathering spot, heading down the northern sidewalk to Nob Hill.

I can't really say what happened at Nob Hill, as I was up ahead trying to get video for the entry into the park, but I heard that some folks went straight through La Montanita Food Co-op and out the back door, confusing others who were not sure where they went, and where they should go, and at one point the March got commandeered by someone who wanted to go downtown. Well, anyway, it ended up at the park, and we spent another hour or so there before the sleet and rain started to fall.
