Sinceridad y honradez
Vote Tuesday, October 7th, 1997
"I'll work hard for you, your family and all the people of the district—making sure that Albuquerque is a community we can be proud to call home." — Abe Gutmann
Our city is facing many challenges, and we need leaders with vision and integrity, leaders who are committed to working towards a better quality of life for our people.
Abe Gutmann believes in government of, by, and for the people. He believes in getting people involved in the decisions that affect their lives, and Abe walks the talk —he has personally registered over three-thousand new voters over the last three years!
As your city councilor, Abe will hold Town Hall meetings with residents in all parts of the District to discuss community issues. He will listen to your ideas, and encourage people to talk to one another and the pursuit of creative solutions to our problems.
As your city councilor, Abe will represent all of the people in the district because he believes that our strength and unity is in our diversity, not in sameness and conformity.
Community Development
Let's invest in our people by re-developing the South Broadway and South Valley communities, and supporting sustainable development that will create people-friendly housing, with plazas, community centers, and job opportunities convenient for people in our district.
Oppose Harmful Sprawl
We must learn from the mistakes of other cities such as Phoenix that might have turned into sprawling traffic nightmares, and from the success of cities such as Portland that have limited growth and concentrated on revitalizing their inner city areas.
Abe will be a strong voice against the so-called "West-Side Plan" and the road through the Petroglyphs that would lead to neglect of our district and would export jobs to the outskirts.
Revitalize Downtown
Create more mixed income housing downtown so that small, locally owned businesses can thrive in the heart of Albuquerque. We need to develop our public transit system, with light rail and a transportation hub downtown.
Support Local Businesses
Stop the current practice of using industrial revenue bonds to subsidize multi-national corporations; rather, make bonds available to local companies that commit to sound environmental and labor policies.
Promote a Living Wage
All who work should earn enough to live decently. Abe also supports fair pay for all city workers.
A Healthy Environment
Expand curbside recycling. Create incentives for water conservation and use of public transit and compilation. Improve and expand bikepaths.
Prevent Youth Crime
And ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. More resources should be put towards after school recreation, mentoring programs and opportunities for youth to attend summer camp.
Accountable Government
Abe will fight to keep strict campaign spending and contributions caps. Abe will also support making it easier to get Citizen Initiatives on the ballot.
Abe Gutmann: Dedicated to the Public Interest
Abraham Gutmann has worked as a volunteer public interest advocate in the NM State Legislature since 1993, lobbying in support of campaign finance reform, open ballot access, environmental protection, and for compassionate policies towards the poor, children, and the elderly.
Abraham Gutmann was the Green Party's candidate for the US Senate in 1996, and served as State Green Party Chairman from 1994-96.
Abe has been a teacher of Arabic and Turkish for years, and formerly owned a small publishing house. Abe will complete a degree in Political Science and Spanish at UNM this year.
Abe Gutmann is forty-three years old and has lived in New Mexico since 1988. He is married to Jeanne and is the Father of a twelve-year old daughter, Sharifa.
